Why a Scientific Advisory Project Board

50Hertz is pursuing a clear climate and industrial policy goal: by 2032, we want to cover 100 percent of the electricity demand in our grid area with renewable energies - affordably and sustainably. Practitioners need research when it comes to shaping the future together and to developing new approaches and solutions. The SAPB gives 50Hertz direct access to research - and it offers academic institutes the opportunity to put their research results into practice very quickly.

The professors of the SAPB research and teach in the fields of electrical engineering, grid planning, system management, energy market and system modelling, energy economics and resource economics, energy law and digitalization. With their expertise, they cover a wide range of topics that are highly relevant for a progressive transmission system operator.

How the SAPB works

For 50Hertz, scientific studies are an essential part of gaining knowledge in shaping our future. Since 2020, members of the SAPB have investigated a range of issues for us (see below). SAPB members also support other externally commissioned studies.

Semi-annual meetings ensure a regular exchange between the entire SAPB network and representatives from all relevant areas of 50Hertz and ensure that the continued dialog between research and practice.

Common Studies

Green base load for the industry

Rising energy prices and pressure from customers to switch to CO2-neutral supply chains are leading to an increased need for transformation in the industry towards CO2-neutral production. Part of this production chain is a reliable and cost-effective power supply. However, there is currently a lack of concepts and suitable products on the energy market for a round-the-clock supply of 100 percent renewable energy.

The preliminary study 'Green base load capacity for the industry' has developed a rough concept for a 24/7 real-time supply of energy-intensive industries exclusively with renewable energies.

Economic benefits of tapping energy flexibility potential in industry and the tertiary sector

Tapping into new potentials for flexibility is a key component of an efficient electricity system. Studies on the development of climate-neutral energy systems confirm that the potential of several gigawatts should be tapped as early as 2030 through the flexibilization of industrial processes, the construction of new storage and electrolysis plants and the flexible use of heat pumps and electric vehicles. The economic exploitation of the potential has so far been low, partly as a result of insufficient price signals from the market.

The study aims to show how high the economic benefits of industrial flexibility are compared to the development costs and which sectors have the most promising flexibility potential.

Market-based procurement of services for black start capability

The conversion of the electrical energy system also requires adapted grid reconstruction concepts from the grid operators. Regional characteristics play an important role here. The research project focused on how the planned market-based procurement of black start capability can meet the requirements of the future.

The study evaluated how new solutions and technologies for grid restoration can be implemented as part of a transparent and non-discriminatory tender for black start capability.

New approach for quickly estimating future electricity transport requirements

New geopolitical constellations can fundamentally change decades of certainty overnight. The instruments for detailed and efficient planning of energy grids are hardly prepared for such upheavals. Instead, the aim must be to be able to anticipate future electricity transportation requirements even more flexibly and, above all, at an earlier stage.

The research project focused on developing a new approach to quickly and specifically estimate future electricity transport requirements, taking into account the entire range of possible energy system developments.

Scientists from German, Austrian and Swiss research institutions are represented on the Board. The Board meets twice a year to discuss current topics and projects. The first meeting took place in spring 2021.
