Control energy (activated balance energy)

50Hertz publishes the activated reserve power as quarter-hourly averages, categorised in secondary control reserve (SCR = SRL = aFRR – automatic frequency restoration reserves) and tertiary control reserve (TCR = MRL = mFRR – manual frequency restoration reserves). 

While secondary control reserve is automatically activated and used continuously, tertiary control reserve is activated manually in the ¼ h time resolution of schedules to support or even substitute secondary control reserve. 

Secondary control reserve and tertiary control reserve are generally activated based on a common German Merit Order List (MOL). As a result there is a continuous exchange of secondary control reserve and tertiary control reserve activated within the German control areas. Furthermore there is cooperation with neighbouring countries to reduce counter activation of reserve as well as for activation based on a common MOL. The time series of applied secondary control reserve and tertiary control reserve published here correspond with the secondary control reserve or tertiary control reserve activated in the 50Hertz control area. 15-minute control area balance 

The control area balance is calculated based on the sum of all deviations occurring within an individual balancing group. For this calculation, the deviations are derived from the supplied schedules as well as the actual consumption of electricity and the actual feed-in by power plants.

The control area balance is given as the average power, expressed in megawatts (MW), for each quarter-hour. To increase the quality of the data, 50Hertz reserves the right to update the published values at any given time.

A positive control area balance signifies an energy balance deficit in the control area (deficient cover). A negative control area balance represents an energy balance surplus in the control area (excess cover).

From 22.06.2022 onwards, the calculation of the control area balance will take into account the primary control power and the unwanted exchange with neighboring transmission system operators.

Activated secondary control power

Positive values represent an activation of positive secondary control power (increasing production or decreasing load).
Note: From June 17, 2022, the negative secondary control power will also be unsigned released.

Control area balance

Please note that the rule determining plus or minus that applies to the data was changed on 1 May 2009: a positive control area balance signifies an energy balance deficit in the control area (deficient cover). A negative control area balance represents an energy balance surplus in the control area (excess cover).
